Located northeast of Fort Sumner, the Air Base Industrial Park contains 720 acres and has three asphalt runways. A concrete parking apron of 350 feet by 3000 feet, a metal quonset-style hanger and other buildings complete the property. Constructed during WWII, it is it is now used for private planes. The runways are lighted and meet FAA regulations.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Scientific Balloon Facility use the Air Base Industrial Park as a base for launching balloons for scientific research. Since it’s opening in 1987, the National Scientific Balloon Facility has expanded greatly and now brings in scientists from all over Europe.
